You Can Grow Perfect Zinnias In Zones 9 & 10
Want to grow zinnias? Let's talk about everything you need to know!
sandiegoseedcompany.com/product-tag/zinnia-seeds/
These were started from seed and transplanted out on April 7. Because zinnias like warm weather, this is several months from when we do a lot of other flowers, but they're looking good now as things have warmed up.
Zinnias are generally pretty easy to grow. We're trialing this new variety because it's supposed to hold up against powdery mildew which is something that shows up every year. That's if these can hold up through the hot weather we're about to get into!
One thing that you can do (just like we do with basil) is top them. By cutting off the end, you encourage your plants to bush out. This leads to more & longer branches and more blooms!
Like any cut flower, you want to harvest often. By cutting off the reproduction process, you save the plant energy that would have gone into creating seed. Instead, the plant wants to respond by making more flowers which are more opportunities to reproduce.
Speaking of energy, fertilizing can be really helpful. We start with a granular fertilizer when we plant them. We'll do a liquid fish emulsion a handful of times throughout the season as well.
Although this variety is supposed to be resistant to powdery mildew, that can affect a lot of summer crops, zinnias included. To combat this, you want to stay on top of pruning, just like you do with squash, tomatoes, and others. Pruning opens up airflow and gets rid of old or diseased parts of the plant. If you do get powdery mildew on your plants, be sure to prune them as soon as possible and throw that away. You also want to consider the factors WHY that happened in the first place.

    I got a battle going on right now, I put Carolina reaper pepper powder all over the place. I think it went to my neighbor yard the whole slowly moved towards the fence and under. My cat got one and I have another one. As long as they dont mess up my veggies or my lawn I have not had the need to kill them I just try and push them to neighbor's yard. LOL. My wife thinks I am going to end up like the caddie shack deal and come home to a giant crater in the back yard.

    Theyre so whimsical! We used to pull the end and when the stamens came out put the knobby end in our ears like dangling earrings!! They are invasive in my neck if the woods. Have to plant in pots or those tubers will find their way all over!

    Ok I know this far fetched but you sent my tubers and the box got set aside. They’ve been sitting for awhile and the tubers are bit shriveled. Should I still try to plant them? Soak them first? I am in central Florida 10b or a I forget. I can also do them in pots to avoid monsoon summer rains.

    I started snapdragons that I got in a huge variety pack of wildflower seeds here in zone 10a, SE Florida. Started these in January in seed trays, then to pots outside. They took FOREVER to get going and did not really take off until I put them in ground and checked for water needs daily. They took a lot of TLC compared to say nasturtiums or marigolds. Anyhoo, they are now thriving and it is HOT here. Kept them going until the hot wet season upon us now so we’ll see if they survive. Need a small trellis though as heavy rain can knock them over. Love this channel! I learn so much

    So if you want to save seeds, do you bag the flowers to keep pollinators away and only pollinate manually? Also you didn't mention that you need to let the zucchini develop and dry out like a pumpkin right?

    • @SanDiegoSeedCompany
      @SanDiegoSeedCompany 2 дні тому

      If you don't want to get any cross pollination, yes, you should hand pollinate only. Yes, zucchini are also cucurbits and need to stay on the plant to fully let the seeds mature and then dry out.

    Best way to plant marigold seeds is vertically. Using a toothpick to poke a hole ans directly put the seed in black side down. The germination rate are way higher.

      It takes longer for pepper roots to grow out, so yes, it could rot, but if the soil isnt' kept too wet they'll be OK.

    What is considered to hot? Over 100?

    • @SanDiegoSeedCompany
      @SanDiegoSeedCompany 4 дні тому

      It depends on the plant. 100 can greens or herbs, but a healthy tomato or okra can handle it. It's partially the temperature but also the intensity of the sun (and the soil, moisture levels, and much more). If your plants look like they're struggling or wilting and not bouncing back at night, then it's probably too hot for them.

    I’m so glad you mentioned how many varieties of dwarf tomatoes you have! I’ve been trying to find dwarfs and I’m not finding too many out there. This is so great that you touched on the size of the plant; not the size of the fruit. I’m in Texas with blasting hot dry summers so I like that your seeds are acclimated to that climate. And the very best part is you grow your own and that’s pretty rare. Thank you for sharing with us. 👩🏼‍🌾

    Morning, love your channel and learning a bunch. This is my first year doing a tomato trellis. My problem is as the plants get big ( early girl ) the weight broke the string/trellis. How can I prevent that? Thanks so much.

    • @SanDiegoSeedCompany
      @SanDiegoSeedCompany 6 днів тому

      What style of trellis are you doing? Bigger fruits (or even medium in this case) can require a little bit extra support even if you're thinning suckers or excess growth. For this season, you might have to rely on extra string, and next year you can try growing against a cattle panel or something stronger like that and allows you to tie up in more places.

    • @brianpettine8433
      @brianpettine8433 3 дні тому

      @@SanDiegoSeedCompany thanks so much. I did try to put an extra ( heavy duty ) twine. I think I’ll try cattle guard for the bigger fruit. Another question. I live in poway. Ramona/Poway area. So sun is t a problem. In your opinion, can I re start determinate tomato’s now, or is it too late?

    • @SanDiegoSeedCompany
      @SanDiegoSeedCompany 3 дні тому

      @@brianpettine8433 good call. The biggest issue will be the hot sun in the next few months. There's still a long season to grow tomatoes though. You could prune a branch and root that out. It will give you a head start vs starting from seed.
